Notice neither of the sphinxes are pulling the Charioteer - they are at rest as I mentioned. By mythological allusion the sphinxes represent the senses, which are continually propounding riddles. The white sphinx is the symbol of mercy, the black of severity. The white sphinx wears a beneficent expression, while the features of the black one show a forbidding frown. Their contrasting colors are like the contrast between the pillars of the High Priestess. The sphinxes combine animal and human attributes, suggesting a force common to both animal and human. There is quite a bit I left out because it would go on too long. "All magic is in the will." - Eliphas Levi. Use this Key to reaffirm our sense of identity with the One Self during the "battles" of everyday existence. There is so much that could be said about this key. They typify dominion over terrestrial forces. The skirt below the cuirass is divided into eight parts, and is ornamented with gomantic symbols, used in making magical talismans. Three are shown, because the control we exert over cosmic forces by right use of the power of speech does really extend over three worlds. The pentagrams represent mental dominion. The charioteer is corwned, and the crown is surmounted by three golden pentagrams. The wings are blue, like the robe of the High Priestess. The globe is gold or yellow, suggesting self-consciousness. The red symbol on the shield is one form of the Hindu lingam-yoni, typifying the union of positive and negative forces in action.Ībove the shield is a variation of the Egyptian winged globe. The shield on the face of the car has the same significance as the letter-name. In other words, they are the forces that surround the earth - what Eliphas Levi called "Astral Light." Thus the stars in the azure canopy symbolizes the correlation of the influences of distant suns and planets, of zodiacal constellations, and of human forces. Their descent into the physical plane through the activity of the four elements is the cause of all external manifestations. The starry canopy represents the celestial forces. The idea is that each of the four elements is encircled by the One Spirit. This is a symbol of Spirit, for the rings are circles, like zero-signs. The point of division at the center of each pillar is sounded by a ring. Each pillar is divided into two equal parts, reminding us of the Hermetic axiom, As above, so below.
The number four is the number of order and measurement - it refers to the four elements: fire, water, air and earth. Surmounting the body of the chariot are four pillars, supporting the starry canopy. The chariot itself is a movable fence or wall.
The wall, however, is most clearly established and represents a fence - or Chetch, the Hebrew character for this Key. The city is a collection of houses, corresponding to the ideas relating to Beth and the Magician. His vehicle, the body, is represented by the chariot, drawn by the senses, represented by the sphinxes. The charioteer is symbolic of this Inner Self. One must be receptive to your Inner Self. The ancient Qabalistic term for the Inner Initiation is "The Bride's Reception." Stated another way, it is the consciousness of that which is the abode of the inflowing power. The word "Qabalah" comes from the Hebrew verb root Qebel, which means "reception." Key 7, the Chariot, is assigned to the Yetziratic intelligence of receptivity. These lessons, therefore, are derived from B.O.T.A. and will link to each card for reference. Since people design all kinds of tarot decks, I'll be referencing the Tarot deck manufactured by B.O.T.A.
